Up the hill in an Aston! |

The final part of my four week European tour in June was to the Goodwood Festival of Speed. I was very privileged to have the opportunity to drive a 1960 Aston Martin Zagato in the event (see above).

Of course I was somewhat in the shadow of Lewis Hamilton (above) who was making his first appearance, in an F1 car, in front of his home crowd.

And to a lesser degree with Jenson Button (above) who might have found this bicycle easier to control than his Honda F1 car.

1980s pop star Belinda Carlisle was on hand to sing at the black tie ball on the Saturday night...

But my favourite hero was Vic Elford who in 1968 won the Monte Carlo rally, the Targo Florio and the Nuerburgring 1000 kilometres - and finished fourth in his debut F1 race (in a not very good car, in the rain).

At Goodwood Vic was reunited with the Chapparal 2J sucker car (above).

In another Aston was - literally- the world's fastest man: Andy Green - holder of the world land speed record at 1227km/h...

Four-times Indy 500 winner Al Unser Sr. drove this Thompson-Buick special .

Showing clear Elford tendencies, young Joe Twyman drove this Porsche 917 in the dark after dinner at Goodwood House - wearing full black-tie: "the car's owner insisted I dressed correctly," says Twyman. Apparently this was the first time the car had been driven at night since it won the Daytona 24-hours in 1971 (courtesy of Jackie Oliver and Pedro Rodriguez)

And then there was the beautiful Zagato which attracted admiring glances despite its driver being very, very careful with it on the hill!
